Thanks so much for all your words of encouragement and understanding. Taking a few days' break was exactly what I needed, and blogging will probably continue to be less frequent for awhile until things settle down. I haven't been photographing my outfits every day, mainly because many outfits lately have either been repeats or just truly aren't that exciting. It's been nice freeing myself from what was beginning to feel like an obligation; setting up the camera and taking photos takes time in the morning, and lately I haven't had much of an urge to deal with it, especially for outfits that I wasn't too excited about.
There's one upside to a cold summer, though. At this time of year we typically start to see big, creepy spiders in areas that have a lot of landscaping. And because the area around our house has a lot of plants and trees, we tend to see many of those big garden spiders, some of which will occasionally make it into the house and terrify both me and the equally arachnophobic Mark. Not this summer though; I've only seen a few spiders this year and the ones I've seen have been pretty small. So Mark is getting off easy this year, because at one point I put my foot down and declared that as the man of the house, it is his responsibility to put the spiders outside, like it or not. Was that a strike against feminism? Well, I don't care; what's important is that the spiders go back in the garden where they belong.

you are so cute...i am really glad i found your blog!! Will be looking forward to reading more..spiders and all!!
So I shouldn't tell you that I used to raise orb-weaving spiders for a museum...?
Don't worry, Audi. I'm a card carrying, former-hippie, bra-burning feminist, and I make my husb dispose of the bugs. Every time.
Love your nautical look.
I just discovered your blog, and really like it. As a person who lives in Minneapolis, where the temperatures are so extreme - way below zero in the winter and hot and humid in the summer - I would do anything to live in a less extreme climate (as well as living in such a great city as San Francisco). But, the winds on the coast always feel colder, I know. Just wondering your opinion on leaving your legs bare and not wearing pantyhose or tights - unless you are going really casual, of course? It looks good on some women, but I feel unfinished...
I'm with you on the big, creepy spiders! They like to spin webs between the shrubs lining my front walk and many a time have I walked through a web and looked down to see a giant spider on my leg! *shudders* Arachnids aside, it's great to have you back! I missed your unique and fabulous outfits. =) Maybe we will get lucky and get an Indian Summer here in the Bay to make up for this crap summer?
Strike against feminism or not, I won't deal with any bug in the house. It becomes Jon's job. We have moth problems really bad at night.
Such a sweet little t shirt, I love the button details. Glad you've enjoyed the time off. Blogging is supposed to be fun, not a chore. Hey at least the upside to a cold summer is lack of bugs.
One of the few nice things about living in a colder climate is that you don't get giant bugs because they all die in the winter.
When the global warming apocalypse comes you guys will be the only habitable place left. Or not, who knows. Anyway, I am enjoying my few days here and out of the brutal heat.
What a great outfit! I'm really inspired by the pattern mix and the proportions.
Audi - I wonder where in the world you acquired your fear of spiders.
Hmmmm. I just wanted to tell you that we totally approve of the new addition to the family. Spencer is adorable, such a sweet face. We are now actually thinking about getting a puppy to shadow Angus and learn how to be a perfect dog.
Hope Spencer's on the mend and life's gotten back to normal. XOXO
I wish my husband was home more than a few days a week =( I'm always having to kill random spiders and pincher bugs. Hate it!! So gross.
You look great, love this slightly nautical look =)
I'm shocked! First of all, spiders are our friends - they eat flies. Second, what's with getting the men to deal with them?
I live in an old house and we get those big garden spiders too. I tend to either ignore them, or I move them into the garden. Myself. And I'm still alive!
Welcome back. Sorry spiders scare you. I only fear animals big enough to eat me. :)
Heh, I'd be sad that there were less spiders around, but I'm weirdo who loves spiders.
I was the designated spider-remover while out camping a few weeks ago.
I love this look - very French/Euro-looking.
I am not a spider fan either! They are just too creepy for me.
Great look. My husband is the designated spider-remover and he gives me attitude about it. And he's not even afraid - just lazy!
Audi - thanks for validating my feelings about this horrendous "summer" weather we've been having. You know my workplace is also a fogbank/wind tunnel, so I feel your pain. My only comfort is getting home to Oakland where sometimes the sun in shining.
I feel like a broken record bitching about the weather, but come ON!
BTW, lovely ensemble, though my ankles feel cold looking at it :)
I'm glad you send the spiders back in the garden rather than squashing them. I am a fan of spiders - and appreciate your compassion over your repulsion. Honest!
My husband many years ago purchased a package of praying mantis egg cases for some "organic pest control" for our veggie garden. My then-7YO son opened the package and discovered that the eggs had hatched! He startled and accidentally let a few dozen or so teeny praying mantis babies escape into the house. Each baby was a perfectly formed mantis, but so tiny they could have balanced on a pinkie fingernail.
They eventually settled into one mantis per room, and the house was never so bug-free as it was that summer.
My brother has a spider Thing as well--in his case, he's particularly afraid of black widows. Which, understandable, their bites cause some scary things to happen to people. But I was helping him move out of his house a couple of years ago, and when it came time to go into the long-unused garage where he'd stored many boxes, he opened the door, saw a multitude of spiderwebs, and froze. He was paralyzed and couldn't step foot inside, at ALL. I ended up having to get all his boxes for him. So, you know, it happens to guys too!

Rambling aside, I agree with Sheila, this is very continental looking, haha. Love the scarf!
Great outfit. The pants are great! I,too,am glad that you don't kill the spiders. I also place them outside in the garden. I hate to say it but after many
100+ degree days, I would like a little Frisco weather. Houston has volunteers that go out and hand out bottled water to homeless people and are trying to encourage them to go to cooling areas.
Suzanne Sugarbaker: Oh, oh! I've got one. This just makes me furious. You know when men use women's liberation as an excuse not to kill bugs for them. Oh I just hate that! I don't care what anybody says, I think the man should have to kill the bug!
-Tessa :D
Ha! It took me a long time to train my husband that he is the one to deal with spiders, but he seems to be getting it now.
When our cats bring a live mouse into the house? I will catch and take it outside. But spiders are terrifying and Husband must deal with them.
Ahhh hahaha I am dealing with those exact spiders too. They are pushy little bastards! I have been having our basement room re-floored and so alll the furniture and stuff is outside on the patio; simultaneously, I am cleaning out the rest of the basement. Every day I go down there to keep working and the same spider dude has built a giant web right across the basement door (anchored on some of the relocated furniture and the overhang above the door.) The webs are beautiful but he creeps me out, so every day I tear it all down so I can pass through. Yesterday I stopped a few feet short and just said "oh, COME ON, DUDE, ENOUGH OF THIS CRAP! GET OUT OF MY WAY!" and before I had even moved, he zipped up the web and back onto the overhang at lightning speed. I could practically hear him muttering "crazy human b****!!!dammit!!!" under his breath. LOL! I have never had a spider understand English before.
Oh well, at least they aren't poisonous. We have black widows too and I steer well clear of THOSE. I think my husband got a glancing bite from one a couple of years ago and although he didn't suffer serious health problems, the tiny wound was necrotic and took months to heal over completely.
Our summer up here in Vallejo has been miserable too. We are usually about ten degrees warmer than SF this time of year, and we rarely get a heavy blanket of fog like you San Franciscans do, but every morning has been gray, cold and dismal. Evenings and nights are in the 50s! I am wearing socks to bed! It is driving me crazy. *sigh*
You look like Jean Seberg! (and not just because of the haircut and sailor stripes). I love love love everything about this.
