Socks and Sandals

This outfit was inspired by Sal, who wore a similar blend of muted colors a couple weeks ago. This was one of those days when it was colder and windier in my work city than it was in my home city, or else I would've also copied Sal's cute short socks with my similar pair of brown sandals.

Speaking of socks and sandals, I've realized lately that this combination is ideal for me, because my feet suffer a lot when I go barefoot in shoes. Which sucks really, because on a hot day I just love the feel of the open air on my feet, almost as much as I love the feel of a warm breeze across bare shoulders. But the fact is that with the exception of a few rare pairs (usually flip-flops), my feet generally react to being sockless with rubbing, burning, swelling, and finally blisters. In fact as I type this I'm sitting here after having gone sockless in flats today, my feet covered with Band-Aids from the blisters generated by a short lunchtime walk. So I'm officially in the market for a few pairs of thinner ankle socks for days like today, when it's far too warm for tights.

I love to see dogs snoozing in the sun.

great outfit Audi, I love that you put textured tights with your sandals. It makes the look so much better.

I've discovered that an ounce of prevention is definitely worth a pound of cure when it comes to blisters. I learned that the hard way on a trip to Canada a couple of years ago. Now if I'm wearing a new pair of shoes, or I'm going to be out all day in one pair without the option of changing shoes, and I know I'll be walking a lot, I tape my feet. Kind of like what some runners do before a race. I hit all the spots I already know blister, like one of my toes, and then I put the tape in my bag for revisions to the tape plan later on. I use medical tape, either clear, or preferably the foam, nude tone kind, and it works wonders.

Now my main complaint is that my brand new Fluevogs give me blisters, even when I wear stockings. I'm rather put out about it, and not sure how to fix it, other than taping my toes every time I wear them.

I'm really enjoying the socks and sandals look or just the socks and open toed shoes look. I get more wear out of the open toed shoes in the winter now. I ordered some of the over the knee socks from Sock Dreams after finding them here on your blog. I have to give them a plug because I was amazed at how quickly they arrived...less than 48 hours to make it from Oregon to Michigan!

I also absolutely love your dog. I have three Staffies myself and love to see happy, beautiful bully breeds! I have a great picture of mine lounging in front of our fireplace I should post on my blog.

I have serious problems with blisters, too! This socks with sandals trend is my dream come true. Plus, sandals aren't just for summer anymore - yay!
PS- your dog is really cute!

LOVE your take on this look. The brown accents are just perfect.

I love the brown and grey together (it reminds me of chickadees). I like Jen's idea for pre-taping blister-prone areas!

I think some thin anklets would look great with those sandals. I love either Gold Toe Anklets (not as great with sandals, as the gold toes show through) or Hue Turn Cuff anklets. Both have the classic thin ribbed cuffs with smooth feet and provide good comfort while looking pretty with dressy shoes. Welovecolors has the same style in nylon in a zillion colors.

I've been lurking around in the blog for a while, going quite back in my reading, and thoroughly enjoyed the pictures and posts. I'm trying to break out of my own "fashion rut" (like the series of posts you had about someone else on that path), and feel I've learned a ton from reflecting on your postings. Thank you. I LOVE your style!!! And I REALLY appreciate you taking the time to share. But now I can't help but ask a question: I am really curious about the tights and sandals look. I totally love it, and would like to replicate it, but it somehow flies against my age-old "only bare legs with sandals" mantras that probably my mom drilled into my head. Do you have by any chance any general suggestions or comments as to what combinations of sandals/open shoes and tights to look for, and what would not work?

Love the combination of soft colours in this and you've been rocking those harnesses recently.

Blister blocker by bandaid...there are other brands but I think that works the best. My bff and I swear by it. I have extremely dry feet and she has the extreme opposite (both gross, I know!) so we both suffer with bare feet in different ways. Slathering the blocker on almost like lotion has helped soooo much!

Anonymous: I think that in general a chunkier shoe is going to be easier to pull off with socks or tights. Check out Sal's post on wearing socks with heels; she shows them with chunky sandals, pumps, mary janes, and oxford-style wedges (http://www.alreadypretty.com/2010/09/personal-style-challenge-sassy-socks.html). If you're sheepish about trying it out, start with a subtle combination, i.e., either socks that match the shoes or that match your skintone, not necessarily in hue but in darkness.
