Keep on Pretending

This outfit was inspired by a fabulous leather shorts ensemble put together by the lovely Style of a Fashionista, who has been rocking some great outfits with the Selena harness she purchased from our shop. I don't own any leather shorts, and I strongly suspect that I'm too old to be wearing them (although, like Sister Wolf, I have an irrational desire to buy some). Come to think of it, 40 is probably too old to be wearing these herringbone shorts too, but obviously that isn't stopping me. One of the real, tangible benefits of getting older is that you get to stop giving a fuck about what people think. I digress.

I felt like this was a variation of the outfit that I could easily wear with dignity, and since this is the only pair of dressy shorts I own, they were my starting point. I loved the look of Fashionista's floaty sheer floral top with the nipped-in underbust harness; this semi-sheer leopard print top was fairly close, and anyway it went with the shorts. I probably won't be buying a leather pair (though I really should learn to never say never), but for now I'll keep on pretending with these.

Top: F21

This is a great outfit! I wasn't aware that there was an age limit to wearing fun, fabulous shorts....I bet if anyone could pull leather shorts off it would be you.

I am totally loving this outfit too. I hope to be as stunning and stylish as you at 40. I believe that it is confidence and preference that should determine whether a person wears shorts. And those legs were made for lovely shorts!

Pshaw! Enjoy your shorts while you can, you whippersnapper.

(Anyway, you're wearing them with boots and tights, for all love.)*

* N.B. I'm sure my fluent Maturin-speak didn't escape your notice.

ok lady, you're making me want one of these harnesses more and more. NOT cool when I've got a while to go before I have a real income.

Seriously though, this looks great. There is no way I will ever believe that you're 40. And I <3 the F-bomb. :)

Wow! Audi, this is a GREAT outfit and the harness makes it even more special, beautifully unique -- it looks gorgeous coming and going!!! (I LOVE the corset lacework on the back).

Forty-schmorty! Get the darn leather shorts; you can rock 'em. In high school (about 35 years ago), I'd visited a German shop in NYC with my father. We picked up some "lederhosen" for my brothers -- and a pair for me! I wore them with 3" "ghillies" (shoes), tights and a turtleneck and a plaid woolen cape I'd sewn. The leather lederhosen had bib-like suspenders (with buckles like the harness) and a horizontal mid-strap inset with an ivory-like carved deer! Nice memories.

Thanks Audi! You always provide inspiration.

Jean

ps: And I'm really partial to that leopard-print blouse. This IS a great, great outfit!

Poppy Buxom: Of course it didn't escape my notice. Never in life, my dear.

A-C: Glad you appreciate the profanity. I try not to let the F-bomb fly too often though; it's my secret weapon. ;-)

Jean: It's actually not from fear of being too old that I'm hesitating on the leather shorts, but rather the notion that they will be but a fleeting trend and are not worth the money. I love your lederhosen story -- perhaps it's my German heritage, but I'm strangely drawn to them!

I'm increasingly of the opinion that all those rules about 'age appropriate' clothing can just go jump. I'm 41 and wear what I damn like. That doesn't mean I dress like a teenager, but that I wear whatever suits me and I feel good in, regardless of whether it fits in with some social convention. In fact, I'm planning on becoming increasingly eccentric as I age, until I'm one of those old ladies who looks simultaneously awesome and batshit crazy.

By the way, the shorts rock.

Are you kidding? We'll have to discuss leather shorts, and soon. Just DIY'ed up a pair for myself!

Loving the mix of prints in this. Stop looking so good - I am trying to resist the shorts and tights combo and you're not making it any easier!

You're definitely not too old for shorts! I think you could really rock a leather pair - and you're always tasteful with your outfits (like this one - please, could anyone but you carry off this as a work outfit? yeah, no).

You know how I feel about "age-appropriate" dressing! Ugh!

Sal, Sheila, Wendy: OK, you've pretty much got me convinced that I DO need to buy a pair. I'll never be this young again, right?

This is too great of a combo not to wear again! I love the shape and colors.

As I scrolled quickly through your posts of the last couple of weeks (catching up from vacation), this one really caught my eye! I like everything about this combination!

Cheers from Buenos Aires =).

Fabulous shorts have no age limit! Age is just a number and nothing more. That is what I tell myself at least. Besides, if they look good on you, why not!?
